 These examinations take place for admissions to the National Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhubaneswar(NISER), and also to the Center for Excellence in Basic Sciences(UM-DAE CEBS), Mumbai. One more elite institute Integrated Science Education & Research Centre(ISERC) of Visva-Bharti University is also accepting NEST to undertake students in their undergraduate program.

Therefore it is safe to say, preparing for NEST is a fairly good decision. Students applying for this examination face competition almost as much as IIT JEEs. It is a rough estimate that out of 80,000 applicants that apply for this examination only 0.5% of the students are able to clear this exam. NISER's rate of intake of students is almost 0.3% - 0.5% which shows what quality of students they are aiming at. The number of students that are admitted to this university is almost 200 students. Some percentage of seats is also left out for the students of Jammu and Kashmir. This examination takes place in both Hindi and English languages.


Eligibility criteria for the NEST examination

These exams are mainly taken for admission to the integrated MSc program coming under the ambit of NISER/CEBS. Following are the major eligibilities that you should not neglect if you are looking forward to attend this examination:

     You should have passed the class 12th exam with Physics, chemistry, mathematics as well as biology. These are mandatory subjects that you must have in your academic session.

     You should have at least 60% or more than that in your examinations.

     If you belong to reserved categories, there is a further relaxation of aggregate marks. You should have attained at least 55% if you belong to these categories.

 

Expected pattern of examination

There is a set of patterns that you should consider if you are looking forward to this exam. The examination of NEST consists of 5 major sections. Some of them are compulsory while others are not. The major portion of the NEST exam syllabus consists of class 12th syllabi.

 

The first section of this exam is compulsory for all students and consists of

  1. Biology
  2. Chemistry
  3. Mathematics
  4. Physics

Out of the rest, four sections only three will be considered in which students were able to perform their best. You should know that the examination aims at the conceptual understanding and analytic ability of students. The questions are MCQ type in which students have to select one out of the four options. For each correct answer, you will be awarded 2.5 marks and for each wrong answer, 1 mark will be deducted from your overall score. So attempt the examination wisely.
